One day after the first session of the We Empower …You Thrive joint Webinar Series, Senator the Honourable Jennifer Baptiste-Primus, Minister of Labour and Small Enterprise Development met with President of the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SATT), Mr. Rajiv Diptee and Ms. Carolyn Sancho, Executive Director, Occupational Safety and Health Authority and Agency (OSHA).
This meeting which formalised the launch of the collaborative Webinar Series, being hosted by the Ministry of Labour and Small Enterprise Development (MOLSED), SATT and OSHA, took place on Thursday July 16th, 2020 at the MOLSED’s Head Office in Port of Spain.
The Online Webinar Series commenced on July 15th and is being streamed via the Zoom platform every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. until August 19th 2020. This comes at a time when the population is attempting to recover from unprecedented social and economic effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Minister of Labour and Small Enterprise Development, Senator the Hon. Jennifer Baptiste-Primus welcomed this invigorating Webinar Series, acknowledging the devastating effects that COVID-19 has created for both employer and employee within the business community. This, recovery period, she believes calls for this type of collaboration, given that it is difficult for businesses to adjust to the ‘new normal’ on their own. She says “This multi-pronged initiative is the first of its kind and provides the stimulus for the development and continuation of robust collaboration between Government Organizations, the business community and workforce.”
In similar fashion, Mr. Rajiv Diptee, President of the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago stated that “The Association feels a very strong obligation to its members and the wider retail sector as we engage in this ground breaking suite of webinars with the Ministry of Labour and Small Enterprise Development.
We absolutely agree that this public private sector collaboration is essential to assist supermarkets as well as other small and medium enterprises in various facets of their operations as per labour policies."
The first Zoom Session on Wednesday, July 15th 2020 featured, Radesh Bassant, Public Relations Officer of the National Insurance Board (NIB) and attracted scores of participants across the business sector. Round II of the NIB session will be conducted on Wednesday July 22, 2020.
Employees and employers of groceries, pharmacies and retail stores throughout Trinidad and Tobago are invited to register to participate in these interactive presentations which will be conducted by a panel of experts from NIB, OSHA and the MOLSED’s Labour Inspectorate and HIV Workplace Advocacy Units. At these sessions, participants will be actively engaged on topics that will guide the way in which businesses operate within the ambit of the labour laws, especially while adapting to the ‘new normal’, inherent to the post-Covid work environment.
